Anyone come across a popcorn ceiling with gold glitter in it? We're about to buy a house this weekend -- only thing I hate -- of course, the popcorn ceilings....that's how I found your site...
Anyway, all of the ceilings have this gold glitter...I wonder if that means that the popcorn was painted....hmmm. What to do...

Gold glitter popcorn ceilings? Now, that's particularly groovy. If you can find a chair or something to stand on that will get you up to one of these star-studded ceilings, wipe your hand across a small area of the popcorn. You should be able to tell if it's painted.

| My grandparents house in the 70's had glitter popcorn in the bedrooms. When my sister and I would spend the night, my grandma would tell us the glitter were "stars". |

| Be careful with these ceilings. I have heard that the gold or sparkles indicades asbestos! Yes, they uses asbestos in acoustic ceiling up 'til1978. I have read that the asbestos is safe as long as it stays on the ceiling, it is dangerous when scraped and breathed in. Take care |

Sorry to bump a thread that is so old...
I am about to close on a house that was built in 1988 or 1989 that has severl rooms of glitter or sparkle in the popcorn. We are fairly certain that there is no asbestosis, given the build date, but we plan to have it tested because we have a baby in the house.
Has anyone had any particular complications with the glitter or sparkle ceiling removal?
The odd thing about these ceilings is that they are only in a few rooms (living room, study, and upper/lower halls), but the drywall work on the rest of the house is immaculate. I used to be a general contractor, and if I could have had my guys get ceilings this smooth on a regular basis, I would have been thrilled.
This was clearly a matter of ugly taste, not workmanship. |

| I'm guessing it's just like regular popcorn with glitter mixed in. Unless it's painted over with glitter paint? If you do get it tested, please do post back to help debunk the myth that all glitter popcorn contains asbestos. |

| If it has glitter it has, unfortunatly, been painted. That's how they get the glitter to stick.. *sighs and looks up at her own* |

| It's still worth trying Kichiru! Our kitchen ceiling was painted and it scraped off just fine. |

| Our house was built in 1991. We had popcorn put on the ceiling. Probably no asbestos. The guy that finished the sheetrock and sprayed the ceiling asked if we wanted glitter. The way he explained it, they blew the glitter on before the popcorn dried and it stuck in the wet popcorn. We did not have the glitter applied. |

We have glitter in ours too. Our whole house has this ceiling, except the bathroom and kitchen. Is the glitter popcorn more difficult to remove than the plain? This house is old...built in 1930, and there is no doubt that the popcorn was used to hide imperfections in the plaster ceiling. We're kind of afraid to remove this because we don't know what we'll find underneath it |

My house was built in 1974. Every room including the stairway with the exception of the kitchen and bathrooms has glittery popcorn on it. I sent samples to a lab (found on the net with instructions for getting a sample off) came back negative for asbestos. I HATE IT. We have now removed it from the entire second floor and stairway and soon will start on the first floor. It has been coming off EASILY. It is messy, but EASY to remove.
popcorn ceiling sucks, cobwebs cling to it, if you try to dust it crumbles off. bugs cling to all the texture (GROSS) and the glitter sometimes comes lose and dangles from a cobbie
>water pump, sprayer $30
> tyvek "painters suit" get a couple per person to have on hand
> 5 gallon bucket (1 each per person, line with kitchen garbage sack, change out as needed
>scrappers
>goggles and masks (i like to use rubbergloves too)
>tape plastic up to the walls using painters tape, cover outlets etc
>-cover the floor
I suggest using luke warm water, if its cold your hands might get cold
follow the instructions on sites like:

| I forgot to mention, our ceiling was perfect underneath! only a few patches were needed near the edges. |
